European Union-PAFO Forge a New Strategic Partnership for African Agriculture

In the evolving landscape of international partnerships, the European Union (EU) and the Pan-African Farmers’ Organization (PAFO) are redefining their cooperation. Nick Goetschalckx, Policy Advisor at the European Commission, visited PAFO’s headquarters in Kigali, Rwanda, to engage with PAFO’s member networks.

A New Vision for Partnership
Historically, the EU has been a key supporter of PAFO’s initiatives, significantly aiding African farmers. Recent talks reveal the EU’s ambition to move beyond a donor role to become a strategic partner actively involved in shaping agricultural policies in Africa. “We want to be seen as a full partner of PAFO,” stated Goetschalckx. PAFO, representing millions of African farmers, plays a crucial role in agricultural policy-making and will continue to ensure that farmers’ voices influence decisions. The EU aims to enhance this role through closer collaboration.

Strengthening Monitoring and Coordination
Discussions also highlighted the need to improve monitoring and evaluation (M&E) and coordination of ongoing projects. Effective coordination between PAFO and its members is vital for maximizing the impact of agricultural initiatives. “Rigorous monitoring and effective coordination are key to achieving our common goals,” added Goetschalckx. These enhancements will facilitate precise project evaluations and identify areas for adjustment.

This shift from a traditional funding model to a true strategic partnership marks a potential new era in international agricultural cooperation. By working together more closely, the EU and PAFO are set to significantly influence African agricultural policies, promising a brighter future for smallholder farmers and sustainable development.
