Innovation Session N°21 : “How farmers and SMEs respond to the changing needs and preferences of consumers” ?

Sustainable food systems in Africa are at the forefront of current economic and social transformations. As the population grows and urbanization accelerates across many African nations, traditional methods of food production are being challenged. Consequently, farmers and small to medium enterprises (SMEs) must adapt swiftly. Therefore, establishing a sustainable food system becomes crucial to meet the increasing demands of consumers. Today, short supply chains are viewed as a key solution that strengthens the sustainability of food systems in Africa. By minimizing intermediaries, these chains enhance connections between local producers and consumers. Furthermore, they promote responsible consumption while also aiding in the reduction of food waste.

The 21st session of the PAFO COLEAD, Innovations series held online on 10 October 2024 focused on the theme: : “How Farmers and SMEs Respond to Changing Consumer Needs and Preferences?” .
This event highlighted initiatives aimed at transforming food systems in Africa in line with sustainable practices. Moreover, sustainable food systems in Africa are essential for addressing the current environmental and economic challenges. Consumer organizations play a significant role by educating the public on the importance of reducing food waste, purchasing local products, and supporting organic options. Such actions encourage better food governance and promote more environmentally respectful production methods.

Fostering sustainable food systems in Africa is vital. Farmers, SMEs, and consumers must collaborate to strengthen these systems. By embracing modern technologies and sustainable practices, they can ensure a more equitable and resilient future for the African agri-food sector.
