From October 15 to 18, 2024, Rome will be the center of a crucial strategic reflection on the future of family farming. The World Food Forum, organized by the FAO, will bring together experts, partners, and key stakeholders to discuss essential topics such as investment, youth, technology, and innovation. One of the key moments will be the mid-term review of the United Nations Decade of Family Farming (UNDFF), launched in 2019. This strategic assessment, titled “Global Forum on Family Farming: UNDFF 2019-28 Mid-Term Review,” will highlight achievements, ongoing challenges, and the necessary adjustments to maximize the impact of family farming over the next five years. This review will also emphasize the crucial role of family farming in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
A Global Collaboration for Innovation and Resilience

The World Food Forum will not only review the first five years of the UNDFF, but also aim to strengthen existing partnerships and open new paths for innovative collaboration. Alongside discussions, a series of initiatives will be launched, such as a radio broadcast in partnership with RRI and the creation of a symbolic farmhouse in the conference hall. These efforts are designed to raise global awareness and actively involve members of networks like YenKasa Africa. A special session will be dedicated to investment in support of young and female farmers, addressing available grants and opportunities, which will enhance the resilience of family farming.
Towards a Sustainable and Inclusive Future
The strategic evaluation of the forum, enriched by surveys conducted with UNDFF partners, will serve as a foundation for guiding the remaining five years of this decade dedicated to family farming. This event will also mark the 20th anniversary of the right to food, in partnership with the Committee on World Food Security. The ensuing discussions and collaborations will not only take stock but also create a concrete action plan to ensure a sustainable and inclusive future, where family farming plays a key role in global food security. By ensuring that the voices of family farmers, youth, and women are heard, the forum will become a catalyst for transforming agricultural policies and building a resilient future for generations to come.
