Farmer-Led Innovation Transforms Agriculture Across Africa: FO-RI II Success Stories

The Pan-African Farmers’ Organization (PAFO), with the support of the EU, IFAD, and AgriCord, is proud to showcase the remarkable impact of the FO-RI II project—“Capacity Strengthening, Lobbying, and Advocacy to Support Agroecology Practices for Sustainable Food Systems in Africa.”

From Madagascar to Mali, from the edge of Virunga to the plains of Tanzania, these farmer-led initiatives demonstrate that agroecology is not just a farming technique—it’s a movement for resilience, sovereignty, and sustainability.

Under the leadership of PAFO and its regional farmer organizations (RFOs), this project documents powerful success stories across six countries. The thematic areas span:

  • 🌾 Agroecology and productivity
  • 🌿 Leveraging indigenous knowledge
  • ☀️ Climate adaptation and mitigation

Highlights from the field:

  • In Madagascar, the Fifata Group helped reduce synthetic fertilizer use by 61% while improving soil health and increasing profits.
  • In DRC, women-led initiatives near Virunga National Park promoted agroforestry and restored degraded land, improving both biodiversity and livelihoods.
  • In Burkina Faso, onion farmers adopted natural pest control and composting techniques, cutting costs and boosting yields sustainably.
  • In Tanzania, rice farmers tripled their yield using the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), reducing water use by 50% and increasing household income.
  • In Mali, a revival of ancestral biopesticide recipes led to healthier soils and empowered communities.
  • In Tunisia, hydroponic greenhouses addressed water scarcity while training farmers in climate-smart techniques.

These success stories prove that farmer-led research and innovation can redefine Africa’s agricultural future.

💡 What PAFO Recommends:

  1. Invest in farmer co-creation and participatory agroecology design.
  2. Scale peer-to-peer learning platforms and agroecology training.
  3. Promote community-led irrigation and resilience financing.
  4. Support women and youth agripreneurs in agroecological businesses.
  5. Ensure agroecology is integrated into national climate and agricultural policies.

The FO-RI II project is a testimony that when farmers lead, Africa thrives.
