OPENING A NEW CHAPTER FOR FARMER-LED GOVERNANCE IN AFRICA
The Pan-African Farmers’ Organization (PAFO) is pleased to announce the election of Mr. Phenias Ndela Gumede as its new President. Mr. Gumede, the President of the South African Conference Agricultural Unions (SACAU) was elected by delegates during the 7th PAFO General Assembly, held in Dakar from 8 to12 December 2025.
Mr. Gumede succeeds Mr. Ibrahima Coulibaly, President of ROPPA, who concluded his mandate after two years marked by institutional reforms, strengthened continental coordination, advocacy and visibility for African farmers. Mr. Coulibaly will continue to serve on the PAFO Board as Vice-President and continue his role of the President of ROPPA, ensuring continuity and strong collaboration between PAFO and regional farmers’ platforms.
A respected farmer-leader from Southern Africa, Mr. Phenias Ndela Gumede brings extensive experience in farmer representation, institutional leadership, and policy engagement. He currently serves as President of the SACAU and has held senior leadership roles within national and regional farmers’ organizations including serving including roles as President ofKwanalu (KZN Agricultural Union) and Deputy President of Agri SA, His professional journey isdefined by a strong commitment to farmer empowerment, improved market access, sustainable agricultural systems, and inclusive, accountable governance.

Gumede. “Together with PAFO’s member organisations, partners and governments, we will strengthen farmer-led governance, expand opportunities for women and youth, and deliver practical solutions that support resilient, productive and profitable family farming across Africa.”
During the General Assembly, members also validated key reports, adopted PAFO’s Strategic Plan 2026–2030, and endorsed a set of resolutions aimed at reinforcing governance, climate resilience, youth inclusion, and market access for smallholder farmers. These decisions provide a clear roadmap for PAFO under its new leadership. PAFO expresses its sincere appreciation to Mr. Ibrahima Coulibaly for his leadership, dedication and lasting contribution to the continental farmers’ movement. His continued role within PAFO’s governance structures reflects the organisation’s commitment to continuity, unity and collective leadership.

renewed leadership and a shared vision for African farmers.
